The Synaxarion (Lives of the Saints):
The Holy Prophet Hosea and the Hieromartyr Andrew of Crete
The Holy Prophet Hosea was one of the twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. He belonged to the tribe of Issachar and lived in the ninth century before the coming of Christ, in the northern kingdom of Israel. He was a contemporary of the holy Prophets Isaiah, Micah, and Amos.
Hosea lived at a difficult time in the history of Israel. Many of the people had forgotten the true God and had turned to idols. They followed false gods and abandoned the covenant that God had made with His people. Seeing this spiritual darkness, the Prophet Hosea called the people to return to the Lord, the God of their fathers.
With courage, he denounced their sins and warned them about the consequences of turning away from God. He foretold that a foreign nation would come against Israel and that the people would be taken into captivity by the Assyrians. His words were not simply words of condemnation. They were a call to repentance and a reminder that God desires the return of His people.
Through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Hosea also spoke about things that would be fulfilled many centuries later in Christ. He foretold the coming of a new covenant and the spreading of the knowledge of the true God among all nations. His prophecy points beyond the Old Testament sacrifices and priesthood and toward the salvation that would come through Jesus Christ.
Hosea also spoke mysteriously about the Messiah. He proclaimed that the Son would come out of Egypt, a prophecy fulfilled when the Holy Family returned from Egypt after the death of Herod. He also spoke of resurrection on the third day: “After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up.” The Apostles later understood these words as pointing toward the Resurrection of Christ.
The prophecies of Saint Hosea are preserved in the book that bears his name. His prophetic ministry continued for more than sixty years. He remained faithful to God throughout his long life and died in deep old age, having devoted himself completely to proclaiming the Word of God.
The life of the Prophet Hosea reminds us that God never stops calling His people back to Himself. Even when people turn away, God continues to speak. His warnings are not meant to destroy us but to awaken our hearts and lead us toward repentance, faith, and life.
The Hieromartyr Andrew of Crete lived many centuries later, during the reign of the iconoclast emperor Constantine V, also known as Constantine Kopronymos. During this period, Christians who honored the holy icons were persecuted. The emperor ordered icons to be removed from churches and homes, and those who resisted were imprisoned and tortured.
Saint Andrew could not remain silent when he saw faithful Christians suffering for their devotion to Christ and the holy icons. When he learned that pious believers were being thrown into prison while criminals were allowed to go free, he went to the Church of the Great Martyr Mamas in Constantinople. There, before everyone, he openly condemned the emperor for persecuting the true Faith.
The emperor attempted to defend his actions by saying that it was foolish to honor objects made of wood and paint. Saint Andrew answered with courage and wisdom. He explained that the honor given to a holy icon does not stop at the wood or paint. Because the icon depicts Christ, the honor shown to the image is directed toward Christ Himself. Therefore, to insult the holy icon of Christ is to insult the One who is represented.
For this confession of faith, the emperor ordered that Saint Andrew be tortured. The saint was dragged through the streets toward the place of execution. Along the way, someone attacked him and cut off his feet. Mortally wounded, Saint Andrew died from his injuries and received the crown of martyrdom.
About a century later, Saint Joseph the Hymnographer composed a Canon in honor of the Hieromartyr Andrew of Crete, preserving the memory of his courage and faithfulness.
Saint Andrew is also remembered as a saint who intercedes for those suffering from seizures and other afflictions.
The lives of Saint Hosea and Saint Andrew are separated by many centuries, yet both give us the same spiritual message: remain faithful to God when the world around you turns away from Him.
Hosea called people back from idols to the living God. Andrew defended the honor of Christ when the truth of the Christian faith was attacked. Both were willing to speak the truth and to remain faithful, whatever the cost.
Their example reminds us that faith is not simply something we believe with our minds. Faith must also shape the way we live. We are called to recognize Christ, to remain close to Him, and to have the courage to follow Him faithfully.
May the prayers of the Holy Prophet Hosea and the Hieromartyr Andrew of Crete help us to keep our hearts faithful to God, to turn away from whatever separates us from Him, and to remain steadfast in the truth of the Gospel.
