The Synaxarion (Lives of the Saints):
Saint Hilarion the Great
Saint Hilarion the Great was born in the year 291 to pagan parents in the Palestinian village of Thabatha, near Gaza. As a young man, he was sent to Alexandria to receive an education. There he encountered Christianity, heard the preaching of the Gospel, and was baptized.
His life changed completely after he learned about the holy ascetic life of Saint Anthony the Great. Hilarion was deeply inspired by the example of this great father of the desert. He went to meet Saint Anthony because he desired to learn from him how to live according to the will of God.
After spending time with Saint Anthony, Hilarion returned to his homeland. By then, his parents had died. He distributed his inheritance among the poor and gave up the comforts and possessions of the world. He then went into the desert near the city of Maium to devote himself completely to prayer and the service of God.
His life in the desert was not easy. Saint Hilarion experienced intense struggles with impure thoughts, temptations, anxiety, and the passions of the flesh. He fought against these temptations through fasting, hard physical labor, prayer, and complete trust in God.
The spiritual struggle was also accompanied by frightening experiences. The devil attempted to frighten the saint and force him to leave the desert. While Hilarion was praying, he sometimes heard what sounded like children crying, women mourning, or wild animals roaring around him.
But Saint Hilarion understood that these sounds were meant to create fear and confusion. He did not run away. Instead, he continued to pray with greater determination. Through prayer, he learned that fear loses its power when the heart is firmly placed in God.
Once, a group of thieves attacked Saint Hilarion. Instead of responding with anger or fear, the saint spoke to them about their way of life. His words touched their hearts so deeply that they abandoned their life of crime and turned away from their lawless ways.
The fame of Saint Hilarion soon spread throughout Palestine. People heard about his holiness and the miracles that God worked through him. The Lord gave him a special gift of healing and the power to drive away unclean spirits.
Many people who were suffering came to him seeking help. Saint Hilarion prayed for them, and through God’s grace many were healed and freed from spiritual oppression. He never demanded payment for his prayers or his ministry.
He reminded people that the gifts of God are freely received and therefore must be freely given. His life reflected the words of Christ: “Freely you have received, freely give.”
Saint Hilarion also possessed great spiritual discernment. According to the tradition of the Church, he could sometimes recognize by a person’s appearance, smell, or clothing which passion was troubling that person’s soul.
People began coming to him not simply because they wanted physical healing, but because they wanted to save their souls. They asked him to guide them in the spiritual life and to teach them how to overcome their passions and grow closer to God.
Under his guidance, many disciples gathered around him. With his blessing, monasteries began to appear throughout Palestine. Saint Hilarion visited these communities and encouraged the monks to live a strict life of prayer, fasting, work, humility, and obedience.
He did not establish monasteries simply as places of retreat from the world. He desired them to become places where people could learn to seek God with their whole heart.
Saint Hilarion eventually left Palestine and moved to the island of Cyprus. About seven years before his death, he sought an even more solitary place where he could devote himself completely to prayer.
There, away from the noise of the world, he continued his ascetic life until the Lord called him to Himself around the year 371 or 372.
The Church remembers Saint Hilarion as one of the great fathers of the desert and as an example of spiritual courage. His life teaches us that the greatest battles are often fought within the human heart.
The temptations that Saint Hilarion faced may appear very different from our own, but the struggle is familiar. We also face fear, anger, selfishness, impurity, pride, discouragement, and many other passions that can pull our hearts away from God.
Saint Hilarion did not overcome these struggles through his own strength alone. He relied on prayer, fasting, work, humility, and God’s grace. He teaches us that holiness is not achieved in one moment. It is built through daily faithfulness.
Saint Hilarion is sometimes depicted holding a scroll with the words:
“The tools of a monk are steadfastness, humility, and love according to God.”
These three virtues summarize much of his spiritual life. Steadfastness means remaining faithful when life becomes difficult. Humility means recognizing that everything good comes from God. And love means seeking God’s will not only for ourselves, but also for the good of others.
Saint Hilarion’s life also shows us that God’s grace is never given for selfish purposes. The grace he received became a blessing for others. He healed the sick, encouraged the suffering, guided those who sought salvation, and helped establish communities devoted to prayer.
His example invites us to ask ourselves: What gifts has God given me, and how am I using them? Do I keep them only for myself, or do I allow them to become a blessing for others?
May Saint Hilarion the Great pray for us, that we may have strength in our spiritual struggles, patience in difficulties, humility in success, and courage in temptation.
May his prayers help us to remain steadfast in faith, to seek God’s will each day, and to discover that true freedom is found not in following every desire of the heart, but in giving our hearts completely to God.
