Tenth Day — Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit
“THE HOLY SPIRIT — THE SOURCE OF LIVING WATER FOR MARRIAGE AND FAMILY”
Sunday (May 31)
John 7:37–39
The Word of God read today on the Feast of Pentecost is one of the deepest passages in Scripture about the Holy Spirit. Standing in the Temple courtyard, Christ says:
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture says, rivers of living water will flow from within him.”
Jesus said this about the Holy Spirit, whom believers would receive (Jn 7:37–39).
These words were spoken during the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles, one of the greatest feasts of Israel. During this feast, the Jewish people remembered their journey through the desert and thanked God for His care and protection.
One of the main parts of the feast was the pouring of water and wine near the altar in the Temple. At that time, people prayed for rain, God’s blessing, and the resurrection of the dead. Because of this, the image of water and new life had a very deep meaning for everyone listening.
And exactly at this moment, Christ declares that He Himself is the source of the “living water” for which Israel had been waiting.
Jesus does not simply give water — He is the source of living water. In the Bible, water is a symbol of life, cleansing, grace, and the action of the Holy Spirit.
Christ teaches that true and complete life can only be found in unity with God. Just as water gives life to the earth, the Holy Spirit gives life to the human soul, cleanses it from sin, and brings new life in God.
The Holy Spirit changes the deepest part of a person — the heart. He heals inner emptiness, gives strength during trials, teaches us to love, forgive, and live according to God’s will. When the Holy Spirit acts in a person’s life, then “rivers of living water” truly begin to flow from within.
We can also look at family life through this Gospel. Every family experiences thirst: thirst for love, peace, understanding, and support. Very often people try to satisfy this thirst only by human effort, forgetting that the true source of love and life is God Himself.
Without the “living water” of the Holy Spirit, even the best human feelings can slowly become weak and tired. But a marriage that opens itself to the Holy Spirit becomes filled with God’s love. Then Christ’s words — “rivers of living water will flow from within” — become real in family life.
The Holy Spirit helps husband and wife not to remain trapped in hurt feelings or selfishness, but to learn to listen, forgive, sacrifice for one another, and find their way back to each other again.
This is especially important today, when war, fear, uncertainty, and daily stress exhaust many Ukrainian families. In such moments, families need not only human strength, but also God’s strength — the strength that supports us when our own strength is no longer enough.
So today let us ask the Holy Spirit to descend upon our families, renew our hearts, and teach us to love, forgive, and stay close to one another even in the hardest times.
May the source of God’s love never dry up in our homes, and may every Christian family become a place of peace, prayer, mutual support, and the living presence of God.
Mission Tasks:
Personal level:
Today, ask the Holy Spirit in prayer to show you what your heart thirsts for most.
Parish level:
Organize or join a parish prayer to the Holy Spirit for Ukrainian families, especially for families separated because of war.
Mission level:
Try to become a “bearer of living water” for others — support a family going through difficulties with kind words, attention, prayer, or simply your presence.
