The Synaxarion (Lives of the Saints):
The Monastic Martyr Anastasia the Roman lost her parents when she was three years old and was raised in a women’s monastery by the Igoumeness Sophia, a nun known for her great spiritual wisdom. Sophia taught Anastasia fervent faith, the fear of God, and obedience. By the age of seventeen, Anastasia had become known for her holiness, ascetic life, and beauty.
During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Decius (249–251), the city administrator Probus ordered Anastasia to be brought before him. With the blessing of her Igoumeness, she willingly went to face the soldiers, ready to suffer for Christ.
Seeing her youth and beauty, Probus tried to persuade her to renounce her faith, promising pleasure, marriage, honor, and glory. But Anastasia replied, “My spouse, my riches, my life and my happiness are my Lord Jesus Christ, and you cannot turn me away from Him by your deceit!”
Probus ordered her to endure terrible tortures, but she remained steadfast, glorifying God. When she asked for water, a Christian named Cyril gave her a drink. For this act of kindness, he was beheaded. Anastasia endured further cruel tortures with courage, and when the people became outraged by her suffering, Probus ordered her beheading. Thus, Saint Anastasia received the unfading crown of martyrdom.
Her body was cast outside the city to be devoured by wild animals, but God preserved her holy relics from dishonor. Guided by an Angel, Igoumeness Sophia found Anastasia’s body and, with the help of two Christians, buried it with reverence.
