Hieromartyr Hierotheus, Bishop of Athens
The Synaxarion (Lives of the Saints):
Hieromartyr Hierotheus was the first Bishop of Athens and a member of the Athenian Areopagus. He was converted to faith in Christ by the holy Apostle Paul together with Saint Dionysius the Areopagite.
The Apostle Paul consecrated Hierotheus as a bishop and entrusted him with preaching the Gospel in Athens. Through his ministry, Saint Hierotheus helped establish and strengthen the Christian faith in the city.
According to Holy Tradition, Saint Hierotheus was present with Saint Dionysius at the repose and burial of the Most Holy Theotokos. He shared with the disciples the great joy and reverence of that sacred moment.
Saint Hierotheus remained faithful to Christ and continued his apostolic ministry despite persecution. He finally gave his life for the Gospel and suffered a martyr’s death in the first century.
The Hieromartyr Hierotheus is remembered as a faithful disciple of the Apostle Paul, the first bishop of Athens, and one who gave his life in service to Christ and His Church.
