Apostle Quadratus of the Seventy
The Synaxarion (Lives of the Saints):
Saint Quadratus, Apostle of the Seventy, preached the Word of God in Athens and Magnesia and served as Bishop of Athens. His biographer called him “a morning star” shining amid the darkness of paganism. Through his preaching, many pagans came to believe in Christ, which stirred the hatred of those who opposed the Christian Faith.
Once, an angry mob attacked Saint Quadratus and tried to stone him. By God’s protection he survived, but he was arrested and thrown into prison, where he died of starvation. His holy body was buried in Magnesia.
In the year 126, Saint Quadratus wrote an Apologia defending Christianity and presented it to Emperor Hadrian. His defense helped bring an end to unjust persecution, and the Emperor issued a decree that no Christian should be condemned without proper cause.
The Apologia was known to the historian Eusebius in the fourth century. Only part of it has survived. Saint Quadratus wrote about the truth of Christ’s miracles and Resurrection, saying that those whom Jesus healed and raised from the dead were witnessed by many, and that some of them remained alive long after Christ’s Ascension, even into the time of the Apostles.
